Freelancers are never just one type of person, so they can be pretty tricky to shop for. From stay at home parents to white-collar workers sneaking slowly away from their 9 to 5s to pursue their passions, freelancers can baffle even the best gift-givers.
Don’t sweat it, because we’ve been through the trenches and talked to freelancers doing everything from graphic design to life coaching, and they’ve told us their biggest hopes and dreams for this holiday season.
If you can’t give them a pipeline full of clients or all of their retainers paid in full for 2018, you can at least snag them something off this list to make next year their best yet.
Here are 12 gifts every freelancer you know will swoon for this holiday season:
#1 — BÖHM Noise-Cancelling Bluetooth Headphones with Built-In Mic
Working in cafes sounds like a dream, but it’s a noisy one. These Bluetooth headphones by BÖHM are the perfect combination of function and style, with an in-line microphone, optional noise-canceling, and big cushy pads that make them comfortable to wear for hours. They’re also USB-rechargeable, so there are no batteries to worry about.
#2 — J+S Vision Blue-Light Blocking Computer Glasses
Too many hours spent in front of the screen give freelancers a lot of problems, from blurry vision to headaches, but these glasses can help. Excessive screen time can cause mood swings and even interfere with sleep. Blocking blue light without any magnification, these glasses are an essential in any freelancer’s tool arsenal, and come with their own sturdy hard case!
#3 — The Passion Planner
Every freelancer has their own preference for a planner, but this one’s a great place to start (because pen and paper feel oh-so-nice in the digital age). The Passion Planner is beautiful, practical for scheduling meetings, and has goal-oriented prompts to keep users on track to reach their goals.
#4 — You Are a Badass At Making Money — By Jen Sincero
Any seasoned freelancer will tell you, half of being successful is just getting your money mindset right. This fun book by Jen Sincero features motivation and real-world stories to get users out of their comfort zones into the pants of serious money-making habits, complete with journaling exercises and money mantras.
#5 — A Spa Day
If there’s one thing a freelancer has a hard time finding, it’s time to relax. Do them the favor they’ll never do themselves and get them a spa day for their stocking (and tell them to leave their smartphone in their car).
#6 — VARIDESK Pro Plus 36 Standing Desk
Sitting all the time isn’t great for your health overall, but it turns out, neither is standing. Convertible standing desks like this one from VARIDESK give you the best of both worlds, with enough space to even include a second monitor in on the action.
#7 — Secondary Monitor
Speaking of secondary monitors, if the freelancer on your shopping list doesn’t have one, this is a high-end gift you can get them that they’ll never stop raving about. Make sure you get any cords required to hook it all up for them so they can break it out on the spot (because good luck stopping them).
#8 — Essential Oil Diffuser
Freelancing often means spending a lot of time working from home, so freelancers like theirs to scream productivity and comfort. Essential oil diffusers are sought after because of the calming effects of aromatherapy, so if they don’t have one yet, chances are that they’re not so secretly hoping to get one.
I’m a big fan of this one because it’s made from wood and glass, and holy wow is it gorgeous!
Be sure to include a few essential oils for them to try too. Mountain Rose Herbs is a great source for high quality, pure essential oils. Go for oils that assist with relaxation and concentration, like lavender and vetiver for relaxation, or rosemary, peppermint, and basil for improved focus.
#9 — Office Desk Chair
If you have a freelancer on your Christmas list with an office and a desk, but the world’s saddest sagging chair you’ve ever seen, get them a chair (because they’ll never do it themselves).
There are tons of options out there, from ergonomic to exercise ball, but we love this one for its sleek style and lack of armrests (because I like to sit cross-legged sometimes while I work). As an added bonus, it’s even made from 30% recycled content.
#10 — Cosori Stainless Steel Mug Warmer
Most freelancers are drawn to caffeine like moths to a flame, but freelancing parents, in particular, may not see a hot cup of coffee all week. This stainless steel mug warmer is powerful enough to warm up a cool cup of coffee and looks pretty darned slick doing it.
#11 — Audiobook Subscription
There’s nothing you’ll learn faster about a freelancer than that they’re constantly absorbing new information, even as they’re getting through a pile of dirty dishes. An audiobook subscription is a generous gift that’ll be used all year, and you’ll get nothing but love from them as they cruise through one business book after another.
